Wellness at Nature Coast Emergency Medicine

Supporting the physician behind the badge

Emergency Medicine is demanding by nature. At Nature Coast Emergency Medicine Education Foundation (NCEMEF), we believe that wellness is foundational—not optional—to becoming an excellent emergency physician.

Our wellness program is designed to support medical students, residents, faculty, and their families through intentional resources that promote resilience, balance, and long-term sustainability in medicine.

Our Wellness Philosophy

Wellness is not a single event or a yoga class—it is a system of support.

Our approach focuses on:

  • Proactive burnout prevention

  • Psychological safety and connection

  • Physical and mental resilience

  • Community and family inclusion

By embedding wellness into the culture of training, we prepare future emergency physicians not just to survive residency—but to thrive throughout their careers.

Wellness Program Pillars

Mental & Emotional Health

We aim to normalize mental health support and reduce stigma in medicine.

Resources may include:

  • Confidential counseling and mental health referrals

  • Peer-support and debriefing sessions after critical events

  • Wellness check-ins during high-stress rotations

Medical students rotating with us see a culture where asking for support is encouraged and respected.

Physical Health & Lifestyle Support

Emergency physicians need sustainable physical health to perform at their best.

Resources may include:

  • Fitness and movement initiatives

  • Nutrition and metabolic health education

  • Access to wellness challenges or activity-based programs

  • Ergonomics and injury prevention education

These initiatives reinforce healthy habits that carry into independent practice.

Family & Community Wellness

We recognize that strong physicians are supported by strong personal lives.

Resources may include:

  • Family-inclusive wellness events

  • Child- and partner-friendly social activities

  • Community gatherings that build connection outside the hospital

  • Support resources for major life transitions (new parenthood, relocation, etc.)

Social Connection & Belonging

Isolation fuels burnout. Connection protects against it.

Resources may include:

  • Resident and faculty social events

  • Mentorship-driven small group gatherings

  • Team-building activities

  • Community service and outreach opportunities

Personal & Professional Growth

Wellness also means feeling supported in your future.

Resources may include:

  • Mentorship focused on career planning and life goals

  • Financial literacy and transition-to-practice education

  • Leadership and professional identity development

  • Support for academic and non-academic career paths

Wellness for Medical Students

Medical students engaging with our program—whether through rotations, events, or mentorship—experience a training environment that:

  • Values human sustainability

  • Actively supports wellness during training

  • Encourages open dialogue about challenges in EM

  • Models healthy professional boundaries
